"Look before you leap"
Life overseas is much more than those glossy pictures of beautiful smiling faces, exotic features and scenes of dream come true environment in Ebony magazines, Ovation and lots of eye-popping soft-sells on the newsstand.
Sometimes the experience could be so disheartening and a substantial part of your life already chunked off before you come to grips with the sudden shock of change while some other times the experience could be quite educational. The crux of the matter is your level of awareness about this new experience before the adventurous nose-diving.
I am privileged to have met people who have spent a life fortune on traveling expenses and document either relocating, settling, visiting or mere adventure¡means you must have saved enough spare, an idea most people from our part of the world will not bet a gamble on only to arrive at a dead-end without a dime left in the entire savings.
Best friends have turned out traitors in this new trend of "Better life overseas", countrymen could make up a new class of security risks especially if they were less informed as you before they jet off, botched dreams, smeared reputations and finally deportation.
Sometimes the humiliation could become so psychological leading to a lifetime depression and most times home embassies have not been in the best position to rescue these blind flying birds.
Before you spin that life savings on such lofty dreams come true adventure, here are some few tips that might save you a lot of unanticipated trouble.
1. Before you fly:
The 21st century is blessed with a vast knowledge of acquiring information through the electronic media
. Information sells cheap right from the comfort of your bedroom. Unlike in the West, life experience in China is an infusion of ancient civilization into the modern age of the 21st century marrying them both to create a new dispensation of ideas bridging the gap of loss of information and
ideas on how other people of the world live and relate to issues of mutual consent, personal interest and international relation due to delayed openness and awareness.
Here, the word "traditional approach to some social issues of global concern"is a common phrase that might not welcome any form of interference. Therefore avail yourself some opportunities on the Internet and check up information regarding ¡°Foreign visitor China¡±
Proper information is like arming yourself with the right defense tool before the unanticipated culture shock based on ignorance.
2. Arrival;
China is known to be one of the cheapest regions of the world in terms of services, food and accommodation,
hotel services could be as cheap as $10 USD in form of chalet and hostels and as high as $200 a night for a
3 Star and about $250 USD for a 5 Star Hotel and are all quite comfortable.
If you are visiting on business or mere pleasure and have no one to pick you up at the airport on arrival,
don't take the risk of following any stranger home in the name of 'Brother's keeper' some of them have turned
out to be wolves in sheep's clothing especially if you are arriving through Beijing International Airport¡You might
likely be accosted by an unknown person 'foreigners like you' claiming some form of relationship or acquaintance
and proffering unsolicited assistance; You might be exposing yourself to some dangers especially in a place with
a wide gap of language barrier.
For first time visitors that might need cheap hotel services, if you are arriving through Beijing International Airport call +86 10-64172632, 64172597- Poachers Inn Youth Hostel, Price range from $10 USD+ a night and quite comfortable, there are other hostels within this district like Beijing City Central International Youth Hostel at No.1 Beijingzhan Qianjie, Dongcheng District, Beijing, Take the "C" line of the Capital Airport shuttle bus to the terminus at Beijing Railway Station (Beijing Zhan) or Beijing International Hotel, (West Gate of the Hotel). then walking to the south direction(Beijing Zhan), you will find the City Central Youth Hostel located on you right side.

After you have secured yourself a hotel accommodation, the next thing is to locate the embassy of your home country.
3. Report at your country embassy and make yourself known. Oversea embassy of your home country is like your community house back home and the ambassador serves as the head of the community house much more than that, a custodian of the great legacy of your home country and image, registering your presence at the embassy could save your head from those nightmarish experiences of a sojourner in a foreign land.

4. Visa Renewal and Extensions:
In China, visa duration begins to read the first day the
'entry permit' stamp is endorsed on your passport at the immigration point
of entry. For business visa, category 'F' ensure you come to China with the
invitation documents used to procure the visa from the inviting organization,
you might need it again. If you have need to continue staying, visa renewal and
extensions should be due minimum of 5 days to its expiry and maximum of 7 days to
its expiry, call and report to the inviting organization and discuss your issues with
them. For category 'L' visa, you must draw up an itinerary of your visit before your
departure.
After the visa has expired for whatsoever reasons, each day of its expiry attracts $55 USD after the first 5 days of grace. ¡®Weekends excluded¡¯ and a maximum of $600:USD as a fine for breach of Chinese immigration law before you could be granted an ¡®exit¡¯
5.Visa waiver of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region.
Most countries enjoy the visa free policy of the HKSAR except few. In China, the mainland and the Hong Kong region run a separate immigration policy under one central government, in this regard a Chinese visa might not guarantee an express entry permit to places like Hong Kong and Macau therefore holders of Nigerian Passport or any African country that does not enjoy the free visa policy of HKSAR need apply for Hong Kong visa at the consulate office of the HKSAR in Beijing located at Henderson Center, No.18 Jian Guo Mei Wai 21st Floor, Office Tower 1 Opposite Beijingzhan (pronounced as ¡®dzan¡¯) meaning Beijing Train Station if you have any need to visit Hong Kong, call +86 010 65186318 ext. 035 or order for a Hong Kong visa by post mail at least 2 weeks before your visa expires. This applies to holders of Chinese mainland Foreigner Resident Permit Single Entry as well.
Unfortunately, most ill-informed foreign visitors in this category has suffered the harrowing experience of deportation from the Hong Kong International Airport for failing to abide by this rule.
Finally, for the adventurous traveler from Nigeria, China is not a transit region to any European country or even Asia, any movement across international borders without proper valid traveling documents might expose you to grave dangers and the regrets could be unimaginable.
